What do I need to run REMcalc?

Windows 10 or Windows 11, 32-bit or 64-bit. The program takes less than 10 MB of disk space. A standard Windows user account is enough to install it.

How do I install REMcalc?

Run the installation file REMcalc-…-setup.exe from the Download page. Choose to install only for yourself (recommended, no administrator rights needed) or for all users of the computer (requires an administrator), accept the license terms and confirm the folder. The installation wizard is currently in Czech only. Updating works the same way – the installation file of the new version installs into the same folder. To uninstall, use Windows Settings → Apps.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC” when I start the installation. What now?

The installation file is not digitally signed yet, which is why Windows shows this warning. Choose More info and then Run anyway.

What is the difference between Free and Pro?

None in features or calculation precision – both editions can do the same things. Free only limits the number of entries, such as the length of the calculation history, the number of user variables, the length of a data series or the number of your own formulas in the library. Pro raises these limits considerably or removes them. See the full comparison on the License and pricing page.

Do I need an account? What does the program send to the internet?

You do not need an account – REMcalc works fully without one and sends nothing. The calculation history and the diagnostic log stay on your computer. A REMcalc account is only useful if you want My Formulas to be the same on several computers through the server, or to share libraries with other people. You connect a computer to the account with a code that the program shows and you enter on the website; you never type your account password into the program.

Can I synchronize My Formulas without an account and without the internet?

Yes. In the program open File → Settings…, and on the Library tab choose synchronization through a folder that both computers can see – a network drive, a OneDrive or Dropbox folder, or a USB flash drive. On the other computer choose the same folder. Every change is stored in the history, so nothing gets lost even when you work offline. Changes to different formulas are merged automatically; if you change the same formula differently on two computers, [conflict] appears next to it and Resolve Conflict… lets you choose the valid version.

How do I share a library with colleagues?

Sharing works through a REMcalc account. In the Expression Library window choose New Library… in the library list, add formulas and share it by e-mail with another REMcalc account using Share… – read only, or read and edit. Your colleague sees the library after synchronizing. From a read-only library they can copy a formula into their own My Formulas. Your My Formulas always remain yours only.

I used EMcalc. Can I bring my library (.exp) with me?

Yes. REMcalc reads EMcalc libraries in the .exp format unchanged: in the Expression Library window load one with Open…. The original EMcalc library, including its BASIC tasks, comes with the installation. Formulas you want to keep editing or synchronizing can be copied with To My Formulas. Expressions from EMcalc give the same results; only chained powers such as 2^3^2 are now evaluated from the right as in mathematics, where EMcalc reported an error.

Which languages does REMcalc speak?

The program and its help are available in Czech, English and German. Switch the language without restarting in the File → Language menu; on first start REMcalc follows the language of Windows. The content of the supplied formula libraries, the license terms and, for now, the installation wizard remain in Czech.

Can REMcalc be used in batch files or from other programs?

Yes – that is what remcalc-cli.exe in the program folder is for. It uses the same engine as the main window, takes expressions from parameters, from a file or from the output of another program, and prints the results as text, a table or JSON. The exit code tells the batch file whether the calculation succeeded.

Does REMcalc do statistics, regression, unit conversions or equations?

Not yet. These features of the original EMcalc are being prepared and are shown in grey in the menu. You can already copy a data series to the clipboard as a table and process it, for example, in a spreadsheet.

I found a bug. How do I report it?

Tell us through the contact form what you did and what happened. The program version helps (Help → About REMcalc). REMcalc keeps a diagnostic log, which you find under Help → Diagnostic Log Folder. The log is never sent anywhere by itself and contains the expressions you entered – send it only if you want to.
